Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 12th ICDS Congress in
Warsaw, Poland, September 5-6, 2002. This meeting, originally planned for October 2001, had
to be postponed. We anticipate that by next September, the world will be safer and
travel will be back to normal. The 12th ICDS Congress will include some specific
features that should not be missed.
This meeting represents an ongoing educational task that was started enthusiastically
by some of the pioneers of Doppler ultrasound techniques nearly twenty years ago. The International Cardiac Doppler Society (ICDS) was founded in 1983.
Today, its goals remain unchanged, and include: advancing the understanding of Doppler
ultrasound techniques, facilitating the diffusion into clinical practice of Doppler
applications in a wide range of cardiovascular disorders, stimulating promising new
developments, and promoting fruitful contacts between scientists and clinicians from
a variety of disciplines spanning the spectrum of cardiovascular ultrasound. Initially
created at a small meeting in Florida, ICDS now includes enthusiastic members from
around the world, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
We are particularly honored that Poland, and more specifically Warsaw, has been selected as the location of the 12th ICDS Congress. Besides the competition for
the "Daniel Kalmanson Award" (honoring the second ICDS President, and awarded
for the best presentation by a young research scientist), attendees will benefit from
the educational philosophy of the society. While attendees update and refine their
practical knowledge, leading to better care for their patients, they will also enhance
their understanding of the underlying physical and physiological principles that guide
the applications of cardiovascular ultrasound. Significant emphasis will be placed on
the most recent developments in echo-Doppler techniques (including quantitative color Doppler, transesophageal echocardiography, ultrasonic three-dimensional imaging
and Doppler, stress echocardiography, contrast echocardiography, harmonic
imaging, tissue Doppler, intravascular ultrasound, applications in interventional
cardiology, and advances in signal processing and tissue characterization). The various
approaches to management of specific lesions will be discussed from a practical
perspective. And, as always, attendees will have ample opportunities to interact with an
expert international faculty. During this two-day meeting, fruitful discussions between
attendees and faculty will develop in a warm, convivial and friendly atmosphere,
which has been a consistent and popular aspect of ICDS scientific meetings. We look forward to greeting you in Warsaw, and to your active participation in
what we know will be an exciting meeting combining excellent science and an exciting
social program.
Yours Sincerely,
The Program Directors: J. Adamus, P. Hoffman, A. Nowicki, and A. Pearlman
